Giant slalom victory in Aare: Shiffrin draws level with Stenmark

The American won the giant slalom in Aare on Friday and, like Stenmark, has triumphed 86 times in the World Cup. At the same time, the five-time overall World Cup winner got the crystal globe in the giant slalom. Franziska Gritsch, who was third at half time, fell a few goals before the finish line on her way to her best giant slalom result.

Best Austrian was Stephanie Brunner in ninth place. Federica Brignone in second (+0.64s) and Sara Hector in third (+0.92) shared the podium with Shiffrin, who claimed her 15th Crystal Globe. Already on Saturday (10.30 a.m./1.30 p.m.) Shiffrin can become the sole record holder in her favorite discipline slalom.

In the meantime, Gritsch had let the ÖSV women speculate with the first podium finish in the fear and weakness discipline for more than three years. The last ÖSV victory was seven years ago (Eva-Maria Brem Jasna/2016).
