Gigantic cargo plane
Arrival postponed: giant plane Antonow lands later in Nuremberg
by Annette Berger
The Antonov is an aircraft of superlatives. No wonder that aircraft fans in Germany are particularly looking forward to this machine. One of the giants heads for Nuremberg at the beginning of the week.
The event should attract a number of plane spotters to Nuremberg. This weekend, however, they waited in vain: Actually, an Antonov should have landed at Albrecht Dürer Airport on Sunday followingnoon, as “Nordbayern.de” first reported. But the arrival has now been postponed by almost two days. The new scheduled date is Tuesday at 7:30 a.m., a spokesman for Nuremberg Airport said stern with.
Landing an Antonov An-124 is a rarity even by international standards. Because it is one of the largest cargo planes in the world. The record is held by the Antonov An-224, of which only one aircraft operates worldwide and which requires six engines to hoist itself into the air.
But the Antonov 124 with its four engines is also a big chunk: the freighter built in the Ukraine is almost 70 meters long and has a wingspan of more than 73 meters. Even with a take-off weight of 400,000 kilograms, the machine lifts itself elegantly into the air.
Antonow is supposed to bring freight for a company to Nuremberg
Antonov machines are used when particularly large and bulky cargo needs to be transported. That is also the reason for the stay of the super plane in Nuremberg. The jet comes as a charter flight from the USA and brings parts for plant construction for a company in the region, “Nordbayern.de” quoted the airport spokesman as saying.
Airports where such giants land must meet certain standards and requirements. According to the information, this is the case in Nuremberg: “The runway is long enough at 2700 meters,” said the airport spokesman to the portal. And the ground is solid enough. According to the information, an Antonow 124 had already landed in Nuremberg in December 2017.
It’s not unusual for the super-plane’s arrival schedule to change. This was also indicated by the first reports, where an arrival on Sunday was still expected. Because the schedule also depends on whether everything goes according to plan when loading the parts. Changes in the freight business are normal.
And so the plane spotters who were looking forward to this Sunday followingnoon are probably disappointed, but can get their money’s worth on Tuesday morning when the Antonov An-124 begins its approach to Nuremberg. The airport asks for the applicable Corona rules at Albrecht Dürer Airport to comply with

Watch the video: At the end of January, onlookers were able to watch the world’s largest aircraft cut through a thick wall of fog. The spectacle might be seen when the Antonow An-225 landed in the Polish city of Rzeszów. Photos and videos of it were shared on social media shortly therefollowing.
