Kigali: Gianni Infantino has been elected as the president of the International Football Association (FIFA) for the third time in a row. The 52-year-old was re-elected unopposed. The announcement was made at the 73rd FIFA Congress held in Kigali, the Rwandan capital. The term is till 2027.
Infantino succeeded Sepp Blatter as FIFA president in 2016. He was re-elected in 2019. He played a crucial role in making the Qatar World Cup a huge success and might continue till the 2026 World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico. From the next World Cup, the number of teams from 32 to 48 was taken under his leadership.
In his inauguration speech, the Swiss promised to set a record for FIFA’s revenue. “It is a great recognition, honor and responsibility. “My love to all those who hate me and those who love me,” said Infantino.
