“It’s over, friends! You gave me everything, I gave you everything. We did it together,” wrote Buffon, considered one of the best goalkeepers in history, accompanying a video tracing his career.

Buffon, who returned two years ago to Parma, the club of his debut now in the Italian 2nd division, is the player who has played the most matches in the Italian Championship (657).

With Parma (1995-2001 and 2021-23), he won the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) in 1999. With Juventus (2001-18 and 2019-21), he topped Serie A with ten league titles, while failing to conquer the Champions League, defeated in the final three times in 2003, 2015, and 2017.

He also won Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain in 2019, during a one-season stint marked by an early elimination in C1, before returning to Juve.

But his greatest feat of arms will remain the victory of Italy at the 2006 World Cup, under the orders of Marcello Lippi.

“Gigi” is also the record holder for selections (176, between 1997 and 2018) with the Nazionale, with which he played five World Cups (between 1998 and 2014).
