Gian Marco Zignago: Behind the Music, The Journey to His 360° Concert and New Album

2023-12-19 21:08:00
A 360° show, with his best songs, is what the national singer-songwriter will present next December 23 at the Dibós Coliseum. He talks to us regarding that, in addition to his new album, regarding the good sentimental moment he is experiencing and how proud he is of his daughter Nicole.

“In Lima I perform only once or twice a year. And when the possibility of doing it at Dibós appears, a renovated, welcoming place, with an impressive acoustic section and a circular stage, which allows you to have the audience very close, I don’t think twice. Saying goodbye to the year following having toured several places and releasing three singles from what will be my new album, is still a test of staying somewhere, because I am no longer fashionable. That is very clear to me,” comments the national singer-songwriter following ensuring that his peak period was with “Domitila” and “Canción de amor.”

New musical proposal

With a large catalog of 16 studio albums and more than 100 songs, Zignago continues to reinvent itself, without losing its musical identity. Next year he releases a new production with eleven songs, of which seven are duets with artists such as: Mike Bahía (“Contigo hasta el final”), Rubén Blades (“I still find myself”), Silvio Rodríguez, among others.

“Music is a constant search. It involves being honest with what you want to do. First, you follow your influences, then what your heart dictates. You transcend to the extent that you want to transcend. I don’t think I am an example for anyone, but my career can be an example of perseverance, discipline and a lot of desire. Recording with Rubén was a blessing, and that Silvio, one of my mentors, who taught me how to write, has accepted a collaboration with me, is a gift of life. And I told him so. There was genuine emotion, with tears,” he recalls.

New energy

In these last three years, in which he faced a pandemic, prostate cancer and a divorce; Gian Marco assures that he learned to choose his friends and strengthen his ties with those he loves most. [sus hijos y su actual pareja, la actriz colombiana Juliana Molina].

“They have been hard years, of a lot of observation of what is happening around me, of identifying who is who, of how my environment behaves and how I behave with them. The fact that I made certain decisions, that I fell in love once more, has been sobering. I feel blessed by that. I like to know that those who have had to be there, have always been there. I feel very happy, very free now. My love is honest. It’s hard to find someone to get along with, although they bother us a lot with collagen. [Risas]. I’m 19 years older than Juli, although it doesn’t show much because I think life with me and my physique has been quite generous. We had an incredible time, we have a wonderful relationship. And if one day we celebrate love that way (with a marriage), I will do it privately,” she assures.

When he turned 53, last August, Gian Marco remembered his triumphs of soul, his skin marks and scars through a post on Instagram. The death of his father, he confesses, is the greatest of all, indelible, painful.

“The night my father died he had a concert. After seeing him die, I grabbed my car and went to Barranco. He had a commitment to the public. It was a hard moment, but instructive,” he says.

For the singer-songwriter of “Te liería”, many times saying what he thinks caused problems. Aware of this, he considers that opting for silence is usually a healthy option.

“I feel like I have less desire to justify myself. I understood over the years that it is important to calm down, not be so impetuous. If what you are going to say is not nicer than silence, it is better not to say anything. If I really spoke what I thought regarding some aspects that happen to me, they would burn me in the Plaza de Armas,” he jokes.

Filial admiration

Two years ago, Gian Marco had a “sincere and beautiful” conversation with his daughter Nicole. On that occasion, the artist signed by Warner Music Mexico told him that she was gay and that she was in love with her.

“It was a divine gift to be able to have that conversation. I know that outside there are many families and young people who live in a dark, hidden world, of a lot of fear and lies, of appearances and suffering. When my daughter came out with the news on social media, she had to be very brave to endure everything they told her. It was brutal. For me it was an incredible lesson. What did she think regarding the end of her relationship with Fernanda Piña? I admire both because it is one thing to break up because you fought, and another because of an act of love towards oneself, because they know that no matter how much love there is, they do not have the same path. I was very sad, but I applaud them because they are brave and because they have the maturity to say: ‘We have come this far.’”

How do you want to live your life from now on? Zignago Alcóver assures that he only wants to live in “serenity and peace”, between music and the love of his loved ones. Two gifts of life that, in their case, converge into a single feeling.
