The sensitive one Romantic Piano by Gia Margaret longs for nature-loving ambient impressionism in the form of largely instrumental beauty, researches the concept of forest solitude.
It’s hard to say what exactly creates the mysterious appeal of the Chicago musician’s third work. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the sketchy and fragmentary forms of the twelve tracks here still result in such a complete, absolutely rounded whole; or that the meditative and peacefully calming aesthetic of Romantic Piano works just as well as a casually enchanting background soundtrack, just as the 27 minutes of the record, conveying something deeply personal, develop an emotional directness that grabs you with a depth effect that goes beyond associative abstractions: thoughtful Romantic Piano the inner life of the listener can wander just as aimlessly as it is suitable as a concrete reflection catalyst for one’s own state of mind; you can allow yourself to be superficially enchanted, or get involved in more complex details – a bit like the quote with the abyss looking back – only as a comforting soul balm equivalent.
Ultimately, however, it is probably not necessary to specifically locate the latent magic of Gia Margaret’s piano music when so many wonderful scenes here create more than pleasing grace, ambient modulated background and naturalistic field recording textures the neoclassical piano playing not far from Nils Frahm add variable facets and the musician herself is right in an abstract way with a certain pragmatism: “I wanted to make music that was useful„.
Hinoki Wood Sitting at the piano, establishes a dreamy, nostalgic melancholy that is distantly reminiscent of that of Collier (which in the plucked on elegiac strings, hugging the keys Guitar Piece of course becomes even clearer), as minimalistic as it is bittersweet, catchy and homely familiar. In a cozy, warm, comforting way Cicadas the crickets chirp and A Stretch courtes strolling saxophones with a slightly jazzy tone, The language of friendship is underlined with padded trip hop beats and even almost drifts into an endless jam April to April on the Rhodes piano seems particularly anachronistic and out of time Cinnamon seems as if Max Richter were standing in the pelting rain The fabulous world of Amélie think.
In 2017which works as an ethereal reference to the spherical Julia Holter, in which looped and sampled voices serve as timbre until a pumping rhythm conveys more caress than club suitability, the subversive range of the album becomes abundantly clear, but a lot of it is channeled – secretly perhaps just that ultimately not from Romantic Piano fulfilled wishes for Margaret’s fourth work? – at the heart of the record, if City Song Bathing in the reverb, a fully formulated indie folk gem transported through the ambient pop arrangement prism, including gently pulsating percussion and graceful vocals, by Grouper im Trespasser Williams-Mode allows one to fantasize regarding how grandiose Margaret would be in such a more conventionally oriented song format across the board – and so possibly also the unattainable longing that is attractive in many ways, the shapelessly hinted at magic of Romantic Piano medium speed.
