Ghent’s Haunting Exhibition Unveils the Unseen Faces of Gaza’s Conflict

Since yesterday, the death toll from the conflict in Gaza has been visible every evening and night on the side wall of De Vooruit, the building in which the arts center is located. VIERNULVIER takes action on the day that the Hamas attacks in Israel are commemorated. Nearly 1,200 people died. The act of terror marked the start of a bloody invasion of Gaza by the Israeli army.

“This is not exactly poetic and artistic,” VIERNULVIER admits. “The reality is not that either. We want to show our continued outrage.” There have already been 41,909 Palestinian fatalities. VIERNULVIER will supplement the data every day based on official reports from the World Health Organization.

“Hamas’ mass murder of women, children and concertgoers is not a legitimate form of resistance,” VIERNULVIER emphasizes. However, the arts center believes that the response is not proportionate. “70,000 homes of families in Gaza have been destroyed, 96,000 people have been injured and almost 2 million people have fled,” it reads on the VIERNULVIER website.

“Israel violates humanitarian law and sows hatred that will live on for generations. Europe’s hypocrisy is shocking, its position on Ukraine is very clear. There we condemn the invasion and violence against civilians.”

VIERNULVIER calls for a complete look at the broad and detailed argumentation on the website. There is also information about activities surrounding the conflict.
