Ghent customs seized no less than 20.8 million cigarettes during a raid on a warehouse in Maasmechelen last Wednesday, reports the Federal Public Service (SPF) Finances on Friday evening. The cigarettes seized, which were stamped Richmond, Marlboro Red and Marlboro Gold, represent 8.5 million euros in evaded duties.
Customs also seized four road tractors, five semi-trailers and a light truck. The raid took place following a “thorough investigation”, the ministry said. In total, three Poles and two Romanians were deprived of their liberty. Further investigations are in progress.
