Update (10/22/2023) – GS

Hollywood took a big hit this year when actors and writers from the TV, film and games they went on strike, which meant that the launch of some already completed productions had to be postponed, in addition to the postponement of projects that were going to start production.

Although the writers’ union and the major film studios reached an agreement that allowed the writers’ strike to end, the actors’ strike continues, but according to a new report from Deadline, it may soon come to an end.

SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents Hollywood actors, scheduled a new meeting with the executives of AMPTP, the association that represents the major studios, to October 24th, next Tuesday. The new meeting comes following a hiatus of almost two weeks, when the studio union decided to abandon negotiations that were previously underway.

According to studio union representatives, negotiations were abandoned as they believed that the conversation wasn’t “moving in a productive direction”.

The actors’ strike has already completed 100 days, causing many talents to pressure the union so that the movement comes to an end so that they can resume their work, considering that the strike has affected the finances of several professionals in the sector and not just the actors themselves.

For now, we can only wait for the new meeting scheduled for this week to be productive, finally concluding the strike, allowing not only the actors to return to recording, but also to publicize the projects.

Do you think the strike will end with this week’s meeting?

Union authorizes strike by video game actors in the United States if there is no agreement with companies

The Actors Union of the United States (SAG-AFTRA) gave its opinion in favor of a potential strike by employees seeking better working conditions and remuneration in the North American country. The initiative was authorized with 98.2% of the votes in relation to the Interactive Media Agreement, which has been debated in the entertainment segment.

The Union’s inclination towards a possible strike does not mean that the strike will actually happen, as this is a complex movement that requires dialogue with developers and studios, including market giants such as Activision, EA, Epic Games, Insomniac Games and Take Two, owner of Rockstar Games and responsible for the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) franchise.

The Videogame Actors Union and the companies are trying to find a decision that benefits both sides, however, the association that represents the artists seems not to be happy with what was proposed by the executives. Among the points of disagreement are salary adjustments, protections once morest abusive use of AI and safety during work.

The lack of an agreement and the failure of negotiation attempts point to the possibility of a strike among unionized employees. As a result, the studios would be unable to hire actors affiliated with the union, significantly reducing the available workforce until the strike was interrupted.

In a statement commenting on the situation, SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher stated that “It’s time for video game companies to stop playing games and get serious regarding reaching an agreement on this contract.”
