Getting to Know the Scout Symbols and Their Meanings

The Scout Movement is one of the famous scouting movements in Indonesia, and has various symbols that are full of philosophical meaning. These symbols are not just symbols, but also reflect the values, principles, and spirit of the Scouts. Let’s get to know some of the Scout symbols and their meanings.

The main symbol of the Indonesian Scout Movement is the Coconut Shoot. This symbol was created by Soenardjo Atmodipuro and inaugurated on August 14, 1961. The Coconut Shoot was chosen as the symbol because the coconut tree is known to have many benefits and can grow well in various places in Indonesia, depicting Scouts who are expected to be useful for society wherever they are.
Symbolic Meaning
• Coconut Shoots: Symbolizes the young generation who are full of potential to develop and be useful to society.
• Coconut Tree: Symbolizes strength, resilience, and steadfastness.
• Tall Coconuts: Depict high ideals and a strong spirit in achieving goals.

2. Emblem of the Scout Work Unit (Saka).

Scout Work Units, or commonly called Saka, have various symbols that represent special fields in Scouting. Here are some examples of Saka symbols:
• Saka Dirgantara: Inside the emblem there is a picture of an airplane and a rocket, a pair of coconut shoots, a star, and the words SAKA DIRGANTARA. symbolizes aerospace and the spirit to master science and technology in the field of aviation.
Saka Dirgantara provides training and education in the aerospace field, with the aim that scout members can contribute and provide benefits to society, the nation and the state after completing the process.
• Saka Bhayangkara: Inside the symbol there is a shield, star, torch, image of the scout movement symbol and the words SAKA BHAYANGKARA. symbolizes courage and readiness in maintaining security and order.
Saka Bhayangkara functions as a training and education center in the field of public security and order (Kamtibmas). It is hoped that the scout members will be able to provide benefits and serve the community, nation, and state.
• Saka Wira Kartika: The symbol of Saka Wira Kartika is in the form of a regular pentagon containing the Eka Paksi symbol, two coconut shoots of the scout movement, two yellowing stalks of rice and the words SAKA WIRA KATIKA.
Saka Wira Kartika focuses on national defense education and training, with guidance from the Indonesian Army (TNI AD). This program is designed to provide knowledge and skills in the field of national defense to its members.
• Saka Bakti Husada: The symbol is in the form of a regular pentagon, which contains the health symbol, two coconut shoots, a star and the words SAKA BAKTI HUSADA.
Saka Bakti Husada, this provides training and education in the health sector. After completing education in this Saka, the scouts are expected to be able to devote themselves to the community in the health sector.

3. General Proficiency Mark (TKU)

General Proficiency Mark (TKU) is a symbol given to Scout members as recognition of certain achievements in the fields of skills, knowledge, and attitudes. The TKU symbol consists of three levels:
• Siaga: The symbol is a sunflower, symbolizing cheerfulness and enthusiasm for learning.
• Penggalang: The symbol is a knotted rope, symbolizing unity and togetherness.
• Penegak and Pandega: The symbol is two stars, symbolizing skill and maturity.

4. Special Skills Mark (TKK)

Special Skills Mark (TKK) is given to Scouts who have special skills in a particular field. The TKK symbol is round with a picture that corresponds to the field of expertise achieved, such as cooking, agriculture, sports, art, and others.

5. Symbol of Appreciation

The Award Sign is a symbol given to Scout members who have made great contributions or extraordinary achievements. Examples of awards include the Annual Star, Wiratama Badge, and Satya Lencana Melati. These symbols represent awards for the dedication, devotion, and achievements of Scout members.
The Scout symbols are not just symbols, but also a representation of the values, principles, and spirit embraced by the Scout Movement. Each symbol has a deep and philosophical meaning, reflecting the goals and hopes of this movement. By knowing and understanding these symbols, we can better appreciate and support the important role of Scouts in shaping the character of the young generation of Indonesia. These symbols also remind us of the importance of the spirit of togetherness, courage, and dedication in achieving ideals and contributing to society.
