How long after stopping the pill to get pregnant? Every year, many couples ask themselves this question. Delays vary depending on the type of contraception used. Explanations.

A variable delay depending on the method of contraception
On average, the chances of becoming pregnant in the month following the cessation of contraception remain low, around 2%. Indeed, it often takes a few menstrual cycles for ovulation and hormonal balance to fully recover, increasing the chances of obtaining a pregnancy. In any case, no waiting period is recommended after stopping contraception, apart from certain special cases (chronic illness, drug treatments, etc.).
In addition, the type of contraception could influence the time of pregnancy. Recently, US and Danish researchers compiled data on how long it takes to achieve pregnancy after stopping different types of female contraceptives:
estrogen-progestogen pills; contraceptive patches; Vaginal rings; Contraceptive implants; Progestogen injections; Hormonal or copper intrauterine devices (IUDs); The diaphragm.
To know ! The pill does not permanently affect a woman’s fertility. Its action is temporary, and fades when contraception is stopped.

Often several months before becoming pregnant
The results of this study, conducted on nearly 18,000 women between 2007 and 2019, reveal that injectable progestins are those that cause the longest delay in obtaining a pregnancyafter stopping the contraception, between 5 and 8 menstrual cycles. The time to return to normal fertility varied according to the type of contraceptive:
4 cycles for contraceptive patches; 3 cycles for birth control pills and vaginal rings; 2 cycles for implants and IUDs.
At the same time, the data collected indicate that in the long term the various methods of female contraception have little or no impact on fertility. In the end, with or without contraception, couples often have to wait a few months between the moment they decide to have a child and the moment the pregnancy begins. Getting pregnant quickly after stopping the pill is therefore not a decision!
