Getting a 125 Electric Scooter License: A Complete Guide

2023-09-03 09:00:00

Like an equivalent thermal model, driving a 125 electric scooter requires a specific license. In practice, two options are available to you.

Modeled on that applied to thermal scooters, the regulation of electric scooters 125 is framed by the highway code. It designates machines whose nominal power does not exceed 11 kW. For a three-wheeled electric scooter, the power should not exceed 15 kW.

To drive a 125 electric scooter but also a 125 electric motorcycle, the legislation requires a specific license. A1 permit or additional training for B permit, you have two options!

The A1 license

Also called “permit 125”, the category A1 driving license is specifically designed for driving motorcycles and light scooters. It is accessible from 16 years old.

First, you will have to pass the theoretical motorcycle test (ETM or motorcycle code). This highway code exam has 40 questions on traffic rules and good driver behavior. To pass it, you must have 35 or more correct answers.

To this theoretical test is added a practical test. The duration of the training is a minimum of 20 hours, including 8 hours on the track and 12 hours on the road.

The cost of an A1 license may vary from one establishment to another. Most motorcycle schools apply invoiced packages whose price varies between 600 and 1,300 euros.

To note :

If you wish to acquire a machine with a power greater than 11 kW (or 15 kW for a three-wheeler), the A1 license will no longer suffice. You will need to pass the A2 license (up to 35 kW) or A to be able to drive motorcycles of all powers. This will be the case in particular for the most powerful version of the BMW CE 04 which, developing up to 31 kW peak, will require at least the holding of an A2 license.

B license with additional training

If you already have a B license (car license) and are at least 18 years old, you can drive a 125cc electric scooter without needing an A1 license. However, you will need to take additional training called “Training 125” or “Training AM”. To qualify, you must have held a B permit for at least two years.

Aiming to familiarize you with the driving of light two-wheelers and to make you aware of the specificities of driving a scooter, the training lasts 7 hours. She is made of :

2 hours of theory 2 hours of practice on set, out of traffic 3 hours of practice in traffic

Much cheaper than the A1 license, the AM license costs on average between 150 and 400 €.

To note :

Persons holding any category of driving licence, obtained before March 1, 1980, are exempt from the 7-hour training to obtain category A1. Holders of a B license who have insured and used a light motorcycle or a tricycle during the five years preceding 1 January 2011 are exempt from this training.
