The Butantan Institute issued an alert to the population about the rate of deaths from flu (influenza) in the last two years. According to the Ministry of Health, the number of deaths caused by severe cases of the disease increased by 78% in the period, reinforcing the importance of getting vaccinated to strengthen the immune system.

The situation is considered worrying, as only 30% of the population, 20 million of the 80 million people in the priority group, have been vaccinated against the flu so far, even with an immunization campaign underway in the country since April 10.

According to the institute linked to the Secretary of State for Health, not even half of the target set for 90% of the target audience has been reached so far, which indicates that the population is still not looking for health posts to get immunized.

The Brazilian states with the lowest flu vaccine coverage are:

  • Acre: 11%
  • Roraima: 15%
  • Rondônia: 17%
  • Rio de Janeiro: 18%

The states with the highest vaccination rate are:

  • Paraíba: 40%
  • Amazonas: 37%
  • Goiás: 35%
  • Ceará: 35%

Gustavo Mendes, director of Regulatory, Quality Control and Clinical Studies at Butantan, says that the vaccine is safe and this has been attested by Brazilian and international authorities. The virus used in the vaccine is fragmented and inactivated, that is, unable to cause the disease.

Vaccines are updated annually with virus strains with the guidance of the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure the most efficient protection, especially for groups most vulnerable to the disease, which are: elderly, pregnant women, children under five years of age and individuals with chronic diseases.

In this way, the recommendation is to look for the health centers to get the vaccine as soon as possible, because the national flu immunization campaign will run until May 31 and covers all groups: children, adolescents, adults, elderly and pregnant women.

Finally, Butantan says that people with febrile illnesses and Covid-19 should wait for improvement to get vaccinated. Those with egg allergy, anaphylaxis, should only be vaccinated under medical supervision in a suitable environment to control allergic reactions.
