NVIDIA surprised fans by officially releasing Portal: Prelude, a fan-made Portal mod on Steam. Even better, the remastered version is available for free for those who already own the original game. It’s not just a re-release, as the updated version includes new textures, full ray tracing, DLSS 3 for improved performance, NVIDIA Reflex for lower latency, and RTX IO for faster load times. To simplify the setup process, NVIDIA has also released GeForce Game Ready drivers. All changes to the remaster were made by the modders in the spirit of the original release using NVIDIA’s upcoming RTX Remix Creator Toolkit. The company hired renowned modders to modernize the building and improve the lighting. For those unfamiliar with Portal: Prelude, it was originally developed by modders and released in 2008. This prequel to the original Portal game takes place before the time of GLaDOS and features a 10-hour campaign with around 20 test chambers, a fully-voiced story, and mechanics that extend from the first Portal. It remains the highest-rated portal mode with intense competition. A remastered version of Portal: Prelude took eight months to develop and serves as a showcase for RTX Remix, NVIDIA’s modding toolkit. If you already own the original Portal, you can download Portal: Prelude for free right now on Steam.
