With the release of the OnePlus 11, OnePlus provided a bit of teasing regarding its first-ever foldable phone back in March. The company played a short video on stage, which confirmed that the OnePlus Fold is definitely a thing and is coming to the Samsung Z Fold series (source).
Well, it looks like OnePlus really wants to steal Samsung’s thunder. The latest report regarding the device indicates that the OnePlus Fold launch event will be held in New York in the first half of August (source). This means that the device will be launched just a week or two following the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.
Does the OnePlus Fold have what it takes?
Setting the launch date right following Samsung ends up with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 means one thing. That is, OnePlus wants to steal Samsung’s thunder. And the most important part is that the device will be available in the US, India and all other countries where OnePlus is currently offering its devices.
Therefore, OnePlus is also targeting the same markets as Samsung. But the real question is, will the OnePlus Fold have what it takes to compete once morest the Galaxy Z Fold 5? Well, it will all boil down to the specifications and pricing. As far as we know, the device will be an international version of the Oppo Find N3.
This means you can expect to see a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, 16GB of RAM, a QHD+ internal display, and an external 6.5-inch FHD+ display. Both displays are likely to run at a refresh rate of 120Hz, thus providing you with a smooth overall experience.
In terms of software, the OnePlus Fold will be released running Android 13 with Oxygen OS 13.1 on top. And since the device is expected to have up to 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage, you won’t have to worry much while keeping large files.
Finally, when it comes to cameras, the Fold will have a 48MP ultra-wide sensor, a 50MP main sensor with OIS, and a 32MP periscope on the back. If you ask me, these are some decent specs for a foldable phone. And I think OnePlus can attract potential customers for the Z Fold 5 with the right price. But we’ll need to wait and see if that actually happens.
