A little over 7 years ago, an Asian hornet nest was discovered for the first time in Wallonia, in the entity of Brunehaut. Still marginal at the time, this species, which differs from the European hornet by its smaller size, darker body and greater aggressiveness towards bees, is now considered invasive in Belgium.
More aggressive hornets that can cause significant damage to bee production by attacking colonies of bees in hives. The first hive attacks were observed in 2017 in Belgium. The hornet revels in these helpless bees.

So many Hymenoptera that it is not pleasant to come across. If they are not very aggressive towards humans and their stings are no more dangerous than those of wasps, regular attacks are not excluded. Especially near nests… which have tended to multiply in recent weeks.
On social networks, many Belgians are worried regarding the presence of these nests in the direct vicinity of their homes. With, often, a feeling of helplessness in the face of these hornets.
A new invention, awarded at the last Lépine competition in France, might make their task easier: the hornet vacuum cleaner. Manuel Augusto, a 58-year-old resident of Gironde, has created a telescopic pole which, connected to a vacuum cleaner, can swallow the hornet before crushing it. Her name : BeeZen.
A real lethal weapon once morest hornets, which has a serious advantage: the telescopic pole being able to reach nests at 3.5 meters, the hornets do not feel threatened by the human presence. This avoids the risk of bites. “The other advantage consists in the non-use of insecticides, chemicals, synthetic products or propellants presenting risks for our health and our environment”, specifies the inventor.
The invention might be marketed by the end of the summer.
