After matches once morest Slovakia, France and Latvia, Switzerland will find their now “traditional” opponents Sweden, Finland and the Czech Republic as part of the Euro Hockey Tour. For Patrick Fischer’s men, these 3 matches are an opportunity to fine-tune the final adjustments before the World Cup which will be played in Finland and Latvia from May 12 to 28.
Switzerland will first face Sweden in Gothenburg on Thursday (to follow from 6:50 p.m. on RTS 2) before going to Brno to meet Finland on Saturday at noon and then the Czechs on Sunday at 4 p.m. It is only at the end of this 9th and last preparation match that Patrick Fischer will reveal his selection of 25 players for the World Cup.
For these last 3 games, Patrick Fischer has called on 7 players who have just played in the final. So we have the Genevans Robert Mayer, Roger Karrer, Tanner Richard and Marco Miranda, as well as the Biel residents Joren van Pottelberghe, Mike Künzle and Gaëtan Haas.
Scrutinize the NHL
With these additions and the arrival of defender Janis Moser (Arizona Coyotes), Patrick Fischer has 28 players (3 goalies, 10 defenders and 15 forwards). It will therefore be necessary to subtract 3 names, or even more if Roman Josi, Nino Niederreiter, Kevin Fiala and Denis Malgin come to reinforce the contingent.
Do not forget either that although New Jersey has passed the 1st round of the NHL playoffs, Nico Hischier, Jonas Siegenthaler, Akira Schmid and Timo Meier, even if the absence of a contract makes his presence more than uncertain, might still join the Swiss team for the end of the tournament. The 7th match of the Conference semi-finals would take place on Monday May 15, two days following Switzerland entered the competition in Latvia.
Centers in spades
By observing the selection, we realize that Patrick Fischer has decided to go frankly on the centers. He has so far called up Haas, Corvi, Thürkauf, Heim, Richard and Senteler. Although some may evolve on the wing, there is clearly a traffic jam.
In defense, the presence of Moser and Berni, as well as those of Kukan and Geisser, suggest that there are only 4 places left for 6 players. Karrer, Glauser, Loeffel, Marti and Fora will have to show themselves in their best light. As for the young Solothurn, soon to be 19, Lian Bichsel, he might be part of the final selection like Janis Moser in 2019. We know that Patrick Fischer likes to incorporate precocious talents into his squad.
Note to conclude that Switzerland would be tempted to beat Sweden, even during a preparation meeting. We must indeed go back to April 7, 2016 to find traces of a Swiss success once morest the Tre Kronor.
