Ger’ on with it: Hutch’s Electoral Ambitions
BREAKING NEWS — It seems like ‘The Monk’ has not only been making headlines for his shady activities but also for suddenly wanting to trade his dubious past for a shiny new political career! That’s right, Gerry Hutch, who’s just returned from a long holiday in Lanzarote—where we can only assume he was working on his tan and not on his campaign strategy—has confirmed he’s throwing his hat into the political ring in Dublin Central.
Hutch has been keeping a low profile since his recent legal mishaps, including a thrilling escape from jail on a €100,000 bail. But as they say, there’s no rest for the wicked—just a shiny new avenue for a power grab that promises to be just as lucrative as his previous endeavors!
The People’s Choice?
“I am the people’s choice,” Hutch declared, because, of course, if there’s one thing political candidates have in common, it’s the unwavering belief that they can play the role of Robin Hood—minus the whole stealing-from-the-rich-to-give-to-the-poor bit! After all, he claims it was the good people of Dublin Central who asked him to run. Well, bless their hearts; I can hear the cries of joy echoing through the streets already. But isn’t he a bit like that unwanted houseguest who just won’t leave after the weekend—always around, and somehow managing to take over your social life?
Mary Lou McDonald, Sinn Féin leader, hasn’t exactly been rolling out the welcome mat either. When asked if Hutch’s candidacy worried her, she gave a response that could only be described as political fencing: “Anybody can run in the election, that is their prerogative.” You can almost hear the fabric of democracy tearing with politicians trying their hardest to remain polite while keeping a safe distance. It’s like high school prom all over again.
Campaigning 101: The Hutch Method
Hutch’s campaign might not see him rushing through the streets waving posters, though; no, he’s going for a more modern approach. Given the ongoing concerns with his security, our dear ‘Monk’ is leaning heavily on social media. Yes, that’s right! Expect a barrage of video updates posing in front of landmarks that have undoubtedly never heard of his name before. They say ‘videos don’t lie,’ but let’s see how the video shoots go when you have to ensure the camera doesn’t capture you hiding from a few guys in suits!
His campaign team, described as secretive (I mean, does he really think he’s James Bond now?), is reportedly working on strategies aimed at swiping votes from folks like McDonald’s supporters. It’s like ‘Game of Thrones’: Who will sit on the Iron Throne of Dublin Central will it be McDonald or Hutch? Place your bets now, folks!
The Competition
Let’s not forget the other high-profile politicians in the race. There’s Paschal Donohoe from Fine Gael, Gary Gannon of the Social Democrats, and Neasa Hourigan from the Greens. It’s a proper political party, with the vibe of a group project where no one’s doing their fair share. I can already see the campaign ads—Hutch dancing awkwardly with his rivals as they all declare they’re here to serve. Which one of them will end up as the last man (or woman) standing?
Conclusions
So there you have it! Gerry Hutch, the man who’s basically the walking definition of “I can change!” is sprucing up his résumé with plans for political glory. We’ll be watching to see if his campaign leads to a dramatic new chapter or just a continuation of his intriguing—and let’s face it, slightly comedic—life story. If he does get elected, let’s hope he can at least arrange some live-streamed debates; I’d pay to see that showdown—and maybe grab some popcorn while we’re at it!
Apart from the support he enjoys within the north inner city, he is also likely to mop up some of the votes that Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald is expected to lose, along with other ‘anti-establishment’ votes.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has reacted to the news that Gerry Hutch plans to run for election in her constituency.
Hutch last night confirmed he will contest this month’s General Election, after exclusively telling the Sunday World he is ‘the people’s choice’.
The veteran criminal remains under investigation there, while the Hutch Organised Crime Gang (OCG) is a target of a number of different garda units here.
However ‘The Monk’, seen as the patriarch of the Hutch OCG, has had no convictions for crime since the 1980s and was acquitted of the Regency Hotel murder of David Byrne by the Special Criminal Court last year.
Now, he is planning to run a social media campaign due to ongoing concerns over his security and is expected to issue regular video and poster updates on his run for the Dáil.
Hutch has been planning his Dáil run for months and has assembled a secretive campaign team who have identified prospective voters.
The other high-profile politicians standing in the area include Fine Gael’s Paschal Donohoe, Gary Gannon of the Social Democrats and the Green Party’s Neasa Hourigan.
“I’m running with my running mate, Councillor Janice Boylan. This election is about changing the government and we’ll be inviting people to vote for Sinn Féin to change the Government, that’s where my head and my focus is at.”
As a notorious figure in the criminal underworld, has gained significant attention with his announcement, sparking a wave of reactions and speculation in political circles. McDonald’s response highlights her concerns regarding Hutch’s candidacy and the implications it could have on the political landscape in her constituency.
Hutch’s declaration comes at a time when the political atmosphere is charged, with various parties vying for voter support in the upcoming election. His history and presence in the area raise questions about the influences that could shape the outcome of the election, particularly regarding voter sentiment and public safety.
Notably, this election stands to be contentious given Hutch’s reputation, and McDonald’s reaction emphasizes the potential challenges Sinn Féin may face as they navigate the complexities of campaigning amidst such a backdrop. As the election date approaches, both Hutch’s campaign and McDonald’s leadership will be under scrutiny, making for a fascinating political showdown.
