One million kilometers on the clock. Gerry Dirix, 45, is very proud of his car’s unusual performance. This organist from Berigen in Limburg drives a 25-year-old Opel Astra. A longevity that is admired by the local police: “I no longer get arrested during police checks, welcomes Gerry. Everyone knows that my shiny car and I are still in order. One day, a policeman even asked me what products I used to make my car look so shiny inside and out. They all want to know my secret”.
Gerry and his car registered in his name have been doing the rounds of the Flemish media for a few days. On this occasion, he explained to our colleagues his good habits for taking care of his vehicle. In addition to responsible driving which allows him to avoid any accident, the 40-year-old maintains his car well, without overdoing it. He drives between 45 and 50,000 kilometers per year, which he considers “ideal for a diesel car”. “My car helps me to go quietly from point A to point B”he says.
And Gerry to advise: “Take care of your car like your wife, with love and respect”. Thanks to this mantra, the Limburger has made great savings. And he intends to continue like this, preferring the old models to the newer ones. “I don’t like all these electronic devices, and especially the worries that go with them”he confides.
Satisfied, Gerry wants to go to the Opel headquarters in Rüsselsheim to show his car: “They can be proud that I managed to drive a million kilometers with it. On most cars, it stops at 300,000 kilometers”.
