Berlin proposed placing the Gaza Strip under UN control following the conflict
Germany has proposed transferring control of the Gaza Strip to the United Nations following the end of the conflict between Israel and the radical Palestinian movement Hamas. This was reported by the newspaper Politico Europe.
>> Global tribute from the UN to its more than 100 collaborators killed in Gaza
>> Egypt will send an additional 650 tonnes of food aid
>> Twenty-seven Gaza residents suffering from cancer arrived in Turkey
According to the text of a document, Germany said the UN might take control of the Gaza Strip once the conflict ended. This is one of five scenarios proposed by Germany, according to the newspaper. It means “the internationalization of Gaza under the aegis of the UN (and regional partners)” with a “carefully orchestrated transition” towards Palestinian autonomy, “ideally” through elections “combined with an agreement international,” writes Politico. But Germany notes that “this scenario will require significant political and financial investment, as well as an international coalition to resolve security issues with the United Nations.” Some diplomats told the newspaper that Germany’s proposal had not yet received support. One of them even called the document “stillborn,” writes Politico.
