“What Germany wants to implement is against the migration pact,” he said, hinting at Berlin’s policy options. At the same time, he referred to the progress of the works in Evros, stressing that the construction of the fence has not yet been completed, but it is expected to be ready within a year: “We have not completed the fence in Evros, in a year it will be ready” and added “We are doing our debt to Europe, we guard the borders”.
In the context of his interview, the Minister also referred to the importance of supporting the police and border guards, asking for an increase in their salaries: “My request is to increase the salaries of the police officers”. He emphasized that police officers deserve the undivided support of the state: “Our police officers deserve to be supported”, while he added that additional increases in their income will follow: “Other increases in the income of police officers will follow”.
Mr. Chrysochoidis emphasized the government’s commitment to the security forces, underlining that the government will continue to support them both financially and operationally.
New “SafeYOUth” anti-violence app
Michalis Chrysochoidis, recognizing the alarming phenomenon of violence, announced a new application called “Safe YOUth” with the aim of preventing and immediately reporting incidents of violence. It is about the “Panic Button”, a tool that will not only concern minors, but also parents and all those who want to report incidents that are developing in the heat of the moment, either in public places such as squares, or in neighborhoods. “The situation with violence is very worrying for both minors and adults,” he said.
According to the Minister, the new application will be available in 15 days, and its development is the result of a kind sponsorship by Vodafone to the Ministry of Citizen Protection. “We will make announcements. We showed it at the exhibition, but at the same time I want to say that I am very worried”, he underlined.
Tougher penalties for deadly weapons
Mr. Chrysochoidis focused on the need to tighten the legislation on the use of lethal weapons, such as knives and iron fists: “The use of lethal knives is prohibited, but the penalties are not what they should be.” He argued that the government would immediately move forward with legislation to toughen penalties to prevent future incidents of violence.
Citing alarming data, he said that in 2023 there was a 50% increase in juvenile offenders compared to the previous year. “In the eight months of this year, we have 7,706 perpetrators, many of whom deal with theft, burglary, drugs and violence. And in fact we are talking about brutal violence”, underlined the Minister, expressing his concern about the escalating escalation of crime.
