Germany was lucky in the draw for the European Championship groups. But the first really big chunk could already be waiting in the round of 16.
Hamburg – The draw for the preliminary round groups of the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany is in the books. National coach Julian Nagelsmann and his DFB team were lucky because they initially avoided Italy, Croatia and the Netherlands, for example, all of whom would have been possible opponents. The German national team faces Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland.
Germany gets into a feasible group in the European Championship draw
Nagelsmann showed himself opposite MagentaTV satisfied with the draw: “This is not a group of death, but there are no really bad opponents. This is an interesting group in which we obviously want to assert ourselves. Scotland will be a board to start with, but a nice board because we expect an emotional game. They have great fans, it will be a nice start in Munich.”
Sports director Rudi Völler hopes that the DFB team will progress, but warns about the drawn opponents: “We are not in a situation where we disrespect any opponents or take them lightly. The times are over.” The first two teams in each group will surely advance, and the best four third-place teams will qualify for the round of 16.

The first real chunk could be waiting for the German national team there. If the DFB selection becomes group winner, there will be a duel with the runners-up in Group C, which includes England, among others. If Nagelsmann’s team comes second, it would be against second place in Group B – that could then be a game against Spain, Italy or Croatia.
Germany with tough obstacles in a possible knockout phase
Third place in Group A depends on the points of the other third-placed teams. If the DFB team were to make it through, they would definitely face a group winner in the round of 16. As feasible as preliminary group A is, getting through the knockout phase could be difficult.

Germany starts the European Championship against Scotland in Munich on June 14th, against Hungary in Stuttgart on June 19th and against Switzerland in Frankfurt on June 23rd. It will then be clear whether Nagelsmann and his team will continue or whether the European Championship dream is already over. (smr)
