As he begins a tour of East Africa, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he was in favor, particularly in the current context, of the African Union joining the G20.

On his arrival in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, where he must go to the AU headquarters. The organization is currently working as a mediator in the Sudanese conflict between two rival generals

_ »We want to make our contribution to the promotion of peace and security. That is why we looked at the different security issues that arise in different parts of Africa. Particularly and above all, of course, with regard to the conflict which has just broken out in Sudan. We discussed the situation in detail. But I also assured everyone of Germany’s support for a peaceful resolution of the conflict, where of course the African Union plays a very central role. It was important for me, but I think it is also very important for the question of further development,” added Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor.

US and French Presidents Joe Biden and Emmauel Macron have also expressed their desire to see the AU join the organization in the past.

“I made here a very important statement for the African Union. We want to ensure that the African Union gets a seat in the G20, that it can participate and have a say. It is a matter of respect for the continent and its many states, as well as its growing population. », explained Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor.

To date, South Africa is the only African member country of the organization created in 2008. The German Chancellor will then travel to Kenya where he hopes to forge partnerships in clean energy in the country where 90% of the needs are covered by renewables.
