“We don’t have the capacity to deal with so many cases,” Lauterbach told Zeit Online. “There aren’t enough specialized doctors, there aren’t enough places for treatment, we still don’t have medicine. Something is really coming our way,” he warned.

Lauterbach stressed that the problems associated with the so-called “long covid” are often underestimated. “This will also be relevant for the labor market, because unfortunately many will not return to their previous capacity,” he said.

According to an evaluation of data published on Wednesday by the German insurer Techniker Krankenkasse, just under 1% of employed people who had received a diagnosis of coronavirus by PCR test in 2020 were on sick leave the following year with a diagnosis of covid-19 of Long duration.

Also, these sick leaves lasted 105 days on average.
