Scholz acknowledged that these are difficult times in international politics and we need to consider that some things we relied on are no longer what they should be, especially noting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The German Chancellor recalled that Latvia and Germany have been close EU and NATO partners for 20 years, with Germany supporting NATO’s eastern flank with its soldiers in Lithuania and control of airspace in Estonia and now Latvia.
“I am aware that with this cooperation there is a message regarding our solidarity and the principles of NATO, namely, we stand for each other and are ready to defend every centimeter of NATO territory with joint efforts. This is my message to the Baltic countries too – we are standing next to each other shoulder,” Scholz emphasized.
Speaking regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Scholz acknowledged that the West “must do more and do enough to support Ukraine.” Germany provides large-scale support: almost 28 billion euros in the form of arms supplies and other support. In addition, Scholz is satisfied with recent decisions, such as the initiative to supply Czech ammunition.
In the #NATO Let’s stand up for each other – a message that I would like to send above all to the Baltic states. I am grateful for the good cooperation with Latvia, which also hosts our Eurofighter pilots. Love @EvikaSilinawelcome to Berlin. pic.twitter.com/1MUm9Af9Y0
