Germany will take in 2,500 refugees who have fled Ukraine to Moldova, German Foreign Minister Annalina Bierbock said Saturday, as Eastern European efforts to help refugees come under pressure.
The number of refugees who have fled Ukraine since Russia launched a military operation on February 24 has now exceeded 2.5 million, and accommodations in some cities in eastern Europe are running out.
Speaking following meeting her Moldovan counterpart in Chisinau, Birbock said Germany is committed to helping Ukraine’s neighbors take care of refugees and a corridor will be established through Romania to bring people to Germany mainly by bus.
“Europe and our country stand in solidarity with you, and we will take refugees from you,” she added.
More than 270,300 people crossed the border from Ukraine into Moldova, where regarding 105,000 people remained.
On Friday, the German Interior Ministry said that some 109,183 refugees have been registered in Germany so far, and the Germans have offered up to 300,000 private homes to accommodate them.
