Photovoltaic and wind energy production equipment installed in 2023 in Germany reached a record level, but only photovoltaics achieved the targets set in the government’s Berlin strategy, renewable energy industry associations announced on Tuesday, expressing their the hope of a new increase this year on the background of the reduction of bureaucracy, the news agencies Archyde.com and Agerpres.

Germany’s strategic objective is for renewable sources to cover 80% of electricity needs in 2030, up from 52% in 2023.

The German Solar Industry Association (BSW) reported on Tuesday that over one million photovoltaic systems, capable of producing 14 Gigawatts of energy, were installed in Germany last year, up 85% compared to 2022, thanks to an explosion of the demand for photovoltaic systems in the residential sector, which puts this sector on a trajectory that will allow it to reach the objective set for 2030 by the Berlin authorities.

Photovoltaic capacities of 7 Gigawatts were installed last year only in the residential segment in Germany, increasing by 135% at an annual rate and the equivalent of half of the total installed capacity. Almost 31% of new capacities, or 4.3 Gigawatts, were installed in photovoltaic parks, up 40% compared to 2022, BSW added.

“We expect a sustained boom in photovoltaic energy in 2024”

The association expects demand to continue to grow this year, citing survey results that show more than 1.5 million homeowners intend to install a rooftop solar system.

“We expect a sustained boom in photovoltaic energy in 2024,” said BSW president Carsten Koernig who called for red tape to be cut, for example by easing access to suitable locations for the construction of photovoltaic parks.

In the wind energy sector, tenders for the allocation of capacities also reached a record level last year, at around 6.4 Gigawatts, but even so they fell short of the goal of the government in Berlin, which wants by 2030 to be installed onshore capacities of 10 Gigawatts each year, the German Wind Energy Association (BWE) reported last week. According to this association, measures to reduce bureaucracy in the sector are still missing and the new legislative provisions approved last year have not yet fully entered into force.
