According to a media report, the federal government is examining how Germany can supply Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles from Bundeswehr stocks in the coming months. As reported by “Spiegel”, talks are being held between the Ministry of Defense and the defense industry. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) asked the Taurus manufacturer to integrate a limitation for target programming in the cruise missile.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) wants to use technical modifications to the Taurus to prevent Ukraine from launching attacks on Russian territory with the long-range weapon systems.
In industry circles it was said that such a restriction of the system is quite possible, but will take a few weeks. According to “Spiegel” information, Scholz only wants to approve the Taurus delivery when he is convinced of the technical modification.
In addition, the government is no longer making a delivery of cruise missiles from German stocks dependent on arms aid from the USA. So far, it has been said in government circles that the chancellor only wants to deliver cruise missiles when the US provides Kiev with long-range Atacms missiles.
The Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, had previously asked for the cruise missiles to be delivered. Politicians from the CDU, FDP and Greens had supported this. The SPD initially warned that the conflict with Russia would escalate if the weapon system were to be delivered.
With a range of more than 500 kilometers, the Taurus cruise missiles might also reach Russian territory. However, Ukraine has pledged not to use Western weapons for attacks on Russian territory.
In May, Great Britain became the first western country to announce the delivery of Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine. In July, France also agreed to use the cruise missile developed jointly with the British. According to the manufacturer, its range is more than 250 kilometers.
