The Hague – Germany claimed that its arms exports to Israel were carried out in accordance with the rules of international law.
This was stated by Tanya von Oslar-Gleichen, Director of Legal Affairs at the German Foreign Ministry, during the second day’s session of the lawsuit filed by the Republic of Nicaragua once morest Germany at the International Court of Justice, in which it demands that Berlin stop military support for Israel.
Gleichen explained that Israel’s security is “the foundation of German foreign policy,” claiming that “Nicaragua denies Israel’s right to exist.”
She continued: “Germany has always been an advocate for promoting and strengthening international humanitarian law and humanitarian principles. It makes every effort to fulfill its responsibilities towards the Israeli and Palestinian peoples. Berlin categorically rejects Nicaragua’s accusations.”
She added that Germany supports the Palestinian people and the two-state solution, and also supports the Palestinians’ right to self-determination within the 1967 borders, and rejects the illegal settlement policies pursued by Israel.
She stated that a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip “will be possible if Hamas releases the hostages.”
On Monday, the International Court of Justice began its first hearing accusing Germany of “facilitating the commission of genocide” once morest the Palestinians during the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip for 6 months.
According to what was published on the court’s page, via the “X” platform, Nicaragua opened the oral argument regarding its request to issue “temporary measures” once morest Germany in the lawsuit submitted on the first of last March.
International Justice is the highest judicial body in the United Nations.
In its lawsuit, Nicaragua said that Germany “violates the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, signed in 1948, in the wake of the Nazi Holocaust.”
She continued, “Germany is facilitating the commission of genocide by sending military equipment (to Israel) and stopping funding for the United Nations Relief Agency for Palestinian Refugees.”
Nicaragua urges the judges of the court (headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands) to impose “temporary measures” to push Germany to stop providing all forms of support to Israel, including weapons.
“Interim measures” are emergency orders imposed by the court until the case is heard more broadly.
