Italy and Germany have definitively won an extra place in next season’s Champions League after their teams have excelled in European competitions this season, UEFA announced on Friday (10.05).
With the Champions League expanding to 36 teams next season, UEFA had made it clear that two of the four additional places would be filled by European Performance Placements which would be awarded to associations “…with the best collective performance of their clubs in UEFA competitions ».
After the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League semi-finals were completed this week, UEFA said Italy and Germany will finish in the top two places in the federation’s ratings for the 2023/24 season.
Therefore, Dortmund who are currently outside the top four in the Bundesliga will participate as 5th in the next Champions League. Of course, Dortmund has already won a place in this year’s Champions League final where they will face Real Madrid and if they beat the Madrilenians, they will qualify for the next competition anyway as the winner.
This year’s Bundesliga champions Leverkusen are through to the Europa League final where they will face Italy’s Atalanta, who currently hold fifth place in Serie A with a game in hand.
At the same time, Premier League giants Manchester City and Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-finals, damaging England’s chances of improving their team rating.
Aston Villa – who were knocked out of the Europa Conference League semi-finals on Thursday (9/5) by Olympiakos – can seal the fourth and final spot for the next Champions League if they win their next Premier League game to fly out for good “sheet” Tottenham.
