The “most unabashed BVB professional”
Germans beat Akanji for unreasonable wage demands
Contract negotiations between BVB and Manuel Akanji (26) are stalling. The central defender is said to be asking too much. The national star is pilloried for this.

Manuel Akanji (26) is under contract with Borussia Dortmund until the summer of 2023. The BVB bosses have been working on an extension for months. But the longer the contract posse lasts, the more they have to deal with a possible sale. Because the Swiss national star demands a lot of money. Probably simply because he is in a good negotiating position.
These demands are not well received by the Germans. “Sport Bild” portrays the central defender as the “most unabashed BVB professional”. The ex-Basler rejected the offer of eight million euros plus bonuses, instead he wanted ten million. He wants to double his previous salary.
Salary demand not justified with performance
In view of the fact that the 26-year-old was considered a shaky candidate and a central defender with various mistakes in the first three years at BVB, the demand was inappropriate. Ex-BVB professional Jürgen Kohler (56) thinks so too: “He won the cup, otherwise he mightn’t prove why he was brought in.”
Kohler thinks Akanji is well served with an offer of eight million euros. “He has not justified more with his performance so far.” In his assessment, the 1990 world champion only seems to consider the performance of the second-placed team in the Bundesliga. But he also earned his regular place at BVB with strong performances at the EM 2021.
Manchester United offers insane sum
There are probably only two options for those responsible for the club: either the two sides can agree on a contract or Akanji will leave BVB in the summer. The market value of the Swiss, who is currently out with a muscle fiber tearis currently 30 million euros, the pain threshold of Dortmund is 25 million according to “Sport Bild”.
And Manchester United is now actually willing to pay this sum: As “Bild” reported on Thursday, the Premier League club should offer the central defender a four-year contract and 15 million euros a year! Does the problem go away on its own now?
One thing is clear, with Niklas Süle (26) there is already a new central defender at Dortmund in the starting blocks, and the Bayern defender will collect twelve million a year. In addition, BVB is in the race for Nico Schlotterbeck (22) from SC Freiburg. But this one would probably only oblige if Akanji should actually go. Kohler shares this opinion: “I think the question will come: either Akanji or Schlotterbeck. I think both together are unlikely.” (che)
