German String Philharmonic Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Concert in Berlin

2023-10-04 22:36:00

The 11 to 20 year old members of the German String Philharmonic celebrated the 50th anniversary of their orchestra. The concert in Berlin took place at the invitation of the sponsoring orchestra, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (RSB), which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. Two members of the RSB appeared as soloists at the Berlin Haus des Rundfunks: Maud Edenwald in “Deux danses” by Claude Debussy and Mariano Esteban Barco in the oboe concerto by Malcolm Arnold. The solo concerts were framed by music by Béla Bartók, Gideon Klein and Leos Janácek.

The members of the DSP qualify for participation in this youngest federal selection orchestra in Germany through an audition and come together several times a year for rehearsals and concert tours. “The high quality of the uniquely differentiated string sound,” according to a press release from the orchestra, “is primarily characterized by the continuous work with the long-standing team of lecturers, all members of the RSB.” The ensemble was founded in (East) Berlin in 1973 as a radio music school orchestra and has been sponsored by the Association of German Music Schools since 1991. The German String Philharmonic is financially supported by the German Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
