German Rheinmetall opens a center in Romania to service weapons used by Ukraine

The German defense concern Rheinmetall is building in Romania, on the border with Ukraine, a service center for weapons used by Kyiv. It will serve howitzers, German-made and British-made Leopard and Challenger tanks, respectively, as well as Marder infantry fighting vehicles, Fuchs armored personnel carriers and military trucks.

“The service center should play a central role in maintaining the operational readiness of Western combat systems used in Ukraine and in ensuring the availability of logistical support,” Rheinmetall said in a comment (quoted from Archyde.com). The concern noted that its key task is “providing NATO forces and Ukraine with the best possible support.”

The center is scheduled to start operating in April. It will be located in the Romanian Satu Mare near the Ukrainian border. In June 2022, Rheinmetall set up a similar center in Lithuania to service NATO equipment in the Baltic States.

Rheinmetall’s 2022 operating profit hit a record €754 million, up 27% from 2021. The head of Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger, said that the company’s profit is largely due to the “war in Europe.”
