The German Nico Denz won the 14th stage of the Giro disputed between Sierre and Cassano Magnago, settling in the sprint the last survivors of a very long breakaway. Frenchman Bruno Armirail, who arrived 53 seconds later in a chasing group, took 1st place overall.
Nico Denz won the photo-finish in this 14th stage, which took the Simplon Pass, ahead of Canadian Derek Gee. The 2 riders were part of a breakaway of 27 which broke away almost from the start of the stage in Sierre, before splitting into several small groups.
The peloton was more than 18 minutes away when the winner crossed the line. He joined Cassano Magnago more than 20 minutes behind Bruno Armirail, who therefore grabbed a pink jersey that the Welshman Geraint Thomas had worn since the abandonment of Remco Evenepoel.
First Frenchman to wear the pink jersey since 1999
Bruno Armirail is 1’41” ahead of Geraint Thomas in the general classification, Primoz Roglic still pointing to 2” behind the Welshman. Aged 29, the French time trial champion is the first Frenchman to wear the pink jersey since Laurent Jalabert in 1999.
