German Navy chief resigns after controversy

Berlin.- The head of the German Navy, Kay-Achim Schönbach, resigned from his post following controversial statements regarding the crisis in Ukraine, a Defense Ministry spokesman reported yesterday.

The vice admiral, who had dismissed as “nonsense” the idea that Russia wanted to invade Ukraine and had said that Russian President Vladimir Putin deserved respect, will leave his post “with immediate effect”, the spokesman told AFP.

Schönbach said during an event at the Institute for Defense Studies in India that although Germany “needs” Russia, Berlin does not agree with its policy.

“The Crimean peninsula has been lost. It will never return. It is a fact,” he said. Schönbach posted a message on Twitter before his resignation in which he refers to his statements as a “clear mistake”, although he mentioned that they were misunderstood. and taken out of context.
