The only medals for German track and field stars came on the third day of the European Championships in München given at the awards ceremony. One day following the titles for sprinter Gina Lückenkemper and decathlete Niklas Kaul and a big party in the Olympic Stadium, the hosts only had supporting roles for the first time at this European Championship.

All six finals on Wednesday evening took place without German participation following hurdle sprinter Gregor Traber was eliminated in the semi-finals. The two heptathletes Carolin Schäfer and Sophie Weißenberg are in sixth and seventh place at half-time and four disciplines and are only separated by a single point.

Sprinter Gina Lückenkemper sensationally won gold over 100 m at the European Championships in Munich. The 25-year-old prevailed in the Olympic Stadium following a thrilling finish in 10.99 seconds ahead of the Swiss Mujinga Kambundji at the same time – and then had to go to the hospital.

Chances are vague on Thursday

However, hopes of a medal on Thursday are only vague, especially since Weißenberg claims to be ailing. “Of course that sucks too, unfortunately my voice left me completely throughout the day. I hope it will be much better tomorrow. I just have to fight my way through,” said the 24-year-old from Leverkusen.

The former World Championships second and European Championships third Schäfer has 3707 points, the bronze place is currently occupied by Anouk Vetter from the Netherlands with 3824 points. Olympic champion and world champion Nafissatou Thiam from Belgium is safely heading for her next title with 4063 points.

Before the start of the competitions, Kaul and Lückenkemper received their gold medals in the Olympic Park. The 25-year-old shed a few tears during the national anthem. At the medal ceremony, Kaul also got teary-eyed at times. The discus throwers Kristin Pudenz and Claudine Vita, who were decorated with silver and bronze, signed autographs diligently with the medals around their necks.

Hoping for Mihambo

The unexpectedly strong record of four titles so far and a total of eight medals might be the long jumper for the German team this Thursday (from 8:05 p.m. / ARD). Malaika Mihambo Remove. The Olympic champion and two-time world champion also wants to defend her European title. In the qualification, Mihambo was the best jumper with 6.99 meters despite a corona infection following the World Cup.

There will be a total of six decisions in the Olympic Stadium. This also includes the women’s 5000 meters with Konstanze Klosterhalfen, who finished fourth in the 10,000 meters on Monday. Defending champion Mateusz Przybylko, Munich’s local hero Tobias Potye and Jonas Wagner are hoping for good placements in the high jump. (jr/dpa)
