The German Institute for Human Rights concluded that “all necessary conditions have been met” for the ban of the conservative Alternative for Germany party. This was announced today, June 7, by the N-TV news agency, citing a report from the research center.

As the portal notes, the institution authorized to suppress cases of human rights violations accused the AfD of actively and systematically “implementing racist and right-wing extremist goals.”

“The party is making efforts to push the boundaries of what can be said, and thereby change the discourse in such a way that society adapts to its racist, national-ethnic theses,” – the authors of the study note, adding that such attempts are observed “including in the public and political space.”

In the final part of the report, under the heading “Reasons why the AfD may be banned, recommendations to the state and politicians”, it is noted that “in order to protect the inalienable foundations of human rights and, therefore, a free democratic constitutional order, it is essential that awareness of the danger posed by the party, grew both in society and at the state level. In this regard, the authors of the study call on officials and political figures to “act appropriately”, and other parties in Germany to “distance themselves from the Alternative for Germany”.

At the same time, the co-author of the report Hendrik Kremer emphasized in an interview with the agency that the institute does not advocate a ban on the party.

“Rather, the research center seeks to fill a void in the social and legal debate,” he added.

The German Institute for Human Rights positions itself as an “independent” human rights institution, although it receives funding from the budget of the Bundestag. It is noteworthy that the publication of the report became the second precedent of an offensive launched by the political establishment of Germany against an inconvenient party against the backdrop of its record popularity. The day before, the prosecutor’s office in Halle filed charges against the leader of the AfD faction in the state parliament of Thuringia Bjorna Höcke on suspicion of using the slogans of Nazi organizations.

“Höcke is suspected of publicly using the slogan of the NSDAP stormtroopers “Everything for Germany!” (Alles fuer Deutschland) during a speech to approximately 250 listeners at an election event of the Alternative for Germany party on May 29, 2021 in Merseburg, although he knew about the origin and the meaning of this slogan, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

According to data published on May 31 by the Institute of Public Opinion INZA, the rating of the AfD reached 18% of potential voters, which allowed the party to come close to the level of support for the ruling Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). EADaily notes that the Alternative for Germany is the only party in the country that advocates the resumption of trade and economic cooperation with Russia and against rabid Russophobia. Apparently, this fact is decisive in the prohibition of political force.
