German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Saturday that she sees no basis for negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin over Ukraine in the near future.
“I wish I might negotiate. But right now it’s not so much regarding wishing for it, it’s regarding facing reality,” Baerbock said in a joint interview with the member of the Ukrainian army and former boxing champion. Wladimir Klitschko in the German media Bild and Welt, and the American political news portal Politico. They were asked regarding the possibility of negotiating with Mr. Putin.
The diplomat pointed out that in the period preceding the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, there had already been attempts at negotiations to avoid escalation.
“The response was the dispatch of 100,000 (Russian troops to Ukraine, editor’s note)”, lamented Ms. Baerbock. Ukraine must absolutely be able to regain peace, added the head of German diplomacy.
“It will only work if this brutal war of aggression by Russia stops, if Russian soldiers leave Ukraine and these daily night attacks by drones, missiles, bombs on Ukraine end.”
