Berlin, Kiev’s second-largest military aid provider after the United States, is keen to provide assurances as world attention turns to war in the Middle East and concerns over waning support for Ukraine.
The visit is organized as Russia carries out more airstrikes in Ukraine, and Kyiv prepares for a likely more intense attack on the country’s energy facilities in the coming winter months.
This is Pistorius’s second visit to Kyiv since the beginning of this year, when he was appointed Germany’s defense minister. A day earlier, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin paid an unannounced visit to Ukraine.
In addition to the political talks, B. Pistorius will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony in Kyiv’s Maidan Square and visit a military training center.
After some initial hesitation, Germany has dramatically increased its support for Russia-attacked Ukraine and has already provided Kyiv with a range of weapons, from heavy tanks to air defense systems and ammunition.
Russia’s war in Ukraine has also prompted the German government to review its military forces. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (Olaf Scholz) announced about 100 billion euros to strengthen the armed forces.
Feeling guilty about Germany’s role in the Second World War, the country’s government did not place the armed forces among the top priorities, so for many years the army was neglected.
Since the October 7 war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas, Germany has strongly supported Israel.
However, Scholz promised last month that Berlin would continue its support for Kyiv as long as necessary.
