German courts and prosecutors will face major staff shortages over the next decade. That’s the result of a wave of retirements of legal assistants, judges and lawyers, said Sven Rebehn, head of the German Association of Judges.
According to him, the east of the country in particular is affected by this. “The eastern German states are particularly affected by this, because many lawyers there started their profession immediately following German unification and are now reaching retirement age.”
In these states and in the capital Berlin, approximately half of the lawyers are expected to retire in the next ten years. It is estimated that almost 3,000 judges and public prosecutors will reach retirement age there.
To turn the tide, the judiciary must launch an extensive new recruitment campaign, says Rebehn.
