Uriah’s sister: “His dream was to help the Jewish people”

Uriah leaves behind his parents Gideon and Nelli as well as two brothers and two sisters. His grandparents immigrated to Israel in 1972 to set up a retirement home for Holocaust survivors. Her organization “Zedakah” was founded in Germany in 1960 with the aim of helping survivors of Nazi crimes.

His sister, Odelia, told the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Acharonoth four years ago regarding the old people’s home run by German Christians in the northern Israeli town of Ma’alot: “My grandfather remembered very well how innocent Jews were mistreated in Nazi Germany. His dream was to make amends, to help the Jewish people.”

He was the strongest fighter in his unit

Micha Bayer, an uncle, now told the newspaper: “Urijah was injured on Thursday and has been fighting for his life ever since. He believed very strongly in what he was doing. In the hospital I met a comrade of his who was also injured. He said Uriah was the strongest of his unit, both physically and mentally. A quiet, introverted boy but with a lot of humor. His brother Zuriel and his sisters Racheli and Odelia are also with the fighting troops.”

They do not have Israeli citizenship and are therefore not obliged to do military service and volunteered for the army. In a funeral notice, Urijah’s family wrote that he is now “with our Lord Jesus Christ.”
