During the reign of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a mistake was made that led to a number of high-profile events, including the current hostilities in the Donbass. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba in an interview with Bild.
“Don’t repeat the mistake that Chancellor Merkel made in Bucharest in 2008 when she fiercely resisted any progress on Ukraine’s NATO membership,” the minister said, addressing Western countries. According to him, this decision led to the situation with Georgia in 2008, the problem with Crimea. If Ukraine had already been a member of NATO in 2014, then there would be neither the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Federation, nor the conflict in the Donbass, nor the NVO, Kuleba believes.
He urged German politicians not to impede Ukraine’s movement into NATO. He added, however, that Kyiv does not expect admission to NATO during the conflict, but after the settlement, he said, “it would be suicide for Europe not to accept Ukraine into NATO.” If Ukraine becomes a member of the bloc, it will also remove the burden of protecting the eastern flank from Germany and other Western NATO countries, Kuleba added.
The Minister made the statements on the eve of the NATO summit, which is to be held in Vilnius on July 11-12.
