Bonn (ots) – On World AIDS Day, the German AIDS Foundation reminds people not to forget older people with HIV. Almost half of all HIV-positive people in Germany are already older than 50 years. Medically, most are well taken care of. “But in many biographies there is loss, pain and a deep fear of discrimination,” says Dr. Kristel Degener, Executive Chairwoman of the German AIDS Foundation. HIV is still fraught with prejudice today. That is why HIV in old age is an important topic for the German AIDS Foundation. With housing projects, she provides sheltered spaces for older HIV-positive people. In Hanover, the foundation is currently building a residential building for older HIV-positive people. In addition, the German AIDS Foundation supports the initiative “Lebenssort Diversity” of the Berlin gay counseling center for respectful and unprejudiced dealings with senior citizens.
For young people just discovering their sexuality, it is important to provide age-appropriate information regarding HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. On World AIDS Day, the German AIDS Foundation is supporting schoolchildren nationwide with information material who want to provide information regarding HIV in their schools. At the same time, the foundation supports local counseling centers that provide low-threshold advice on HIV and offer HIV tests. This would particularly reach men who have sex with men. The German AIDS Foundation will continue to support such prevention projects in the future.
