German actor Fritz Wepper has died. Wepper was known from the series Derrick, in which he played the role of inspector Harry Klein between 1974 and 1998. Wepper was 82 years old.
Wepper’s wife confirmed her husband’s death to the German tabloid Bild. The actor died “peacefully in his sleep” in a hospice in Upper Bavaria. In 2021, it was announced that the actor had skin cancer. Last December he was treated in hospital for blood poisoning.
Wepper made his breakthrough in 1959 with his role in the anti-war film The Bridge. He later also starred in crime series The Inspector and Derrick. In Derrick he played the right hand of protagonist Horst Tappert for 281 episodes. Together with his brother Elmar, Wepper starred in the TV series Zwei Brüder. Brother Elmar Wepper died in October 2023 at the age of 79.
