GERB Offers Conditional Talks with PP-DB Amid Ongoing Political Stalemate

GERB Offers Conditional Talks with PP-DB Amid Ongoing Political Stalemate

Political Shenanigans in Bulgaria: A Comedy of Errors

Ah, the political landscape of Bulgaria! Is it a parliamentary meeting or the latest episode of a farcical comedy? Welcome, everyone! Grab your popcorn because it seems GERB, the political powerhouse, is pulling some classic *“Let’s Make a Deal”* moves here. So, they’ve invited their buddies for a chat, but there’s a twist: it’s a conditional invite! Yes, folks—meet us, but only after you pick a Speaker of the Parliament. It’s like saying, “I’ll invite you for dinner after you bring dessert.” Well played!

Mr. Borisov, the mastermind behind this conditional soirée, has thrown down the gauntlet. According to his letter to Nikolay Denkov, our dear friends GERB-SDS will deign to sit down with their rivals only once the Speaker is in place. It’s all very “let’s have a meeting after we solve this Rubik’s cube of parliamentary procedure,” or as I like to call it, a political game of Jenga.

But that’s not the end of our comedy sketch. Enter stage left: Atanas Atanasov, co-chairman of “Continuing Change-Democratic Bulgaria.” He’s making it clear that GERB seems to be on a bit of a social media detox—15 days without holding a meeting! It’s like watching the first political force playing hide and seek. And now? Now they’ve suddenly remembered their old mates in the BSP and ITN exist! Maybe they had a group chat that finally got their attention.

“For almost 15 days, the first political force did not hold a single meeting with anyone,” Atanasov pointed out. “And now meetings are starting with BSP, with ITN, but a meeting with the second political force is not planned.”

Astoundingly, Atanasov and his crew have the audacity to have their own candidate for Speaker. Because why not! It’s a bit like bringing your own snacks to a party where everyone else has gone for cheesy puffs. The urgency? It’s palpable. They need a Speaker quickly, or they might just end up choosing the oldest deputy as a last-minute solution—because, you know, that’s how we roll in politics.

But hang on to your hats, folks! Atanasov himself admitted, “I have the feeling that we will not elect a chairman of the National Assembly today either.” Now, that’s the kind of forecasting we are looking for; it’s like predicting rain at a water park! Who knew Bulgarian politics could resemble a circus so vividly? Next, we might see elephants on parade while they deliberate on who gets to sit in that plush Speaker’s chair.

In a nutshell, the GERB party is laying out the welcome mat, but only once they’ve got their political ducks (or should I say chickens?) in a row. It’s a game of procedural musical chairs, and it’s anyone’s guess when the music will stop. Keep your eyes peeled, folks; it’s bound to get even wackier as the session rolls on!

“GERB has extended an invitation for a meeting, albeit under specific conditions. In a correspondence dated Tuesday, Mr. Borisov conveyed to Nikolay Denkov that ‘GERB-SDS is open to discussions regarding legislative priorities during the initial three months of the 51st National Assembly’s session, but such a meeting can only occur following the election of the Parliament Speaker.’ Therefore, we urge the swift election of a Speaker, after which we will convene for discussions.”

Co-chairman of “Continuing Change-Democratic Bulgaria,” Atanas Atanasov, remarked during a live broadcast on NOVA regarding the absence of a meeting invitation from GERB to PP-DB for negotiations, unlike the outreach extended to “BSP-United Left” and “There is such a people.”

He highlighted that a fundamental aspect of politics is seeking support, pointing out that “for nearly 15 days, the leading political force has failed to engage in any discussions with anyone. There has been no effort to gather support for any initiatives. Presently, dialogues are commencing with BSP and ITN, yet no meeting is scheduled with the second-largest political force. It is curious to note the stipulation in the letter – a meeting would only take place after the Speaker of the National Assembly is chosen,” Atanasov elaborated.

Addressing the forthcoming election of the Speaker of the Parliament, Atanasov stated, “We have a candidate, Andrey Tsekov, whom we will nominate once more. What alternative do we have? This morning, at 10 o’clock, our parliamentary group convenes to deliberate our stance on the suggestion to elect Silvi Kirilov as the head of parliament. Ultimately, appointing the oldest deputy is merely a stopgap measure; we must devise a strategy to escape the current stalemate and ensure proper governance,” he asserted with conviction.

He expressed doubt about the outcome of the Speaker election, stating, “I have a lingering impression that we may not successfully elect a chairperson for the National Assembly today either.”
