Successful films inevitably attract imitators. This can be done on a large or small scale. One of the best examples of this is probably Die Hardwhose concept of “a man who is in the wrong place at the wrong time has to fight once morest a superior force of opponents in a limited space” has been imitated in countless films. There are Die Hard on the ship (Red alert), Die Hard in the mountains (Cliffhanger), Die Hard in the football stadium (Final Score), Die Hard im Hockeystadion (Sudden Death) and even two Die Hard-White House blends (White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen).
Some imitators are so successful that they become their own franchises, like before Olympus Has Fallen from the previous listing. Its star Gerard Butler is one of the last classic stalwart action heroes not to dive into the direct-to-DVD market. Olympus Has Fallen isn’t the only imitator of a genre classic that starred Butler. Also his action thriller Criminal Squadin which he played hardened detective “Big Nick” O’Brien, whose team hunted down a gang of brazen bank robbers, drew heavily on Michael Mann’s classic Heat ajar. while man Criminal Squad Originality mightn’t be faulted, but it still served its purpose very well and offered rock-solid, gripping entertainment with tough guys, snappy jokes and robust action.
Just a month following Criminal Squad Released in theaters in early 2018, a sequel was announced, which will also feature Butler O’Shea Jackson Jr. when Donnie, Big Nick’s adversary and criminal mastermind of the first film, would return and continue her cat-and-mouse hunt in Europe. After the promise of a quick sequel, however, years passed before it really became concrete. The pandemic certainly played a role in this, but so did Butler’s busy schedule.
This year it should finally be so far. As announced in the run-up to the Cannes film market, the distributor Briarcliff Entertainment has the US distribution rights to the sequel with the original title Den of Thieves 2: Pantera acquired and announced that it would be released in cinemas in the last quarter of 2024. Filming is scheduled to start in France and Serbia in the next few months. The film is unlikely to be affected by the writers’ strike, as original director and writer Christian Gudegast completed the script long before the strike.
In the sequel, Big Nick will hunt Donnie across Europe, from Marseille, France, where Donnie is planning a heist on the diamond bourse with European diamond thieves and the notorious Pantera mafia, to the French Alps. Thanks to its setting, Butler says the film will be a lot more fun, glamorous and sexier than its darker, moodier predecessor. Hopefully he doesn’t lose what made the first film so special.
But who will return in front of the camera alongside Butler and Jackson Jr.? Jordan Bridges oll reprise his role as FBI Agent “Lobbin’ Bob” Golightly and Meadow Williams returns as Holly. Temmel care (After Passion) has been cast in a new role and is one of the film’s executive producers alongside Williams.
When Criminal Squad 2 will start in Germany is not yet known. But I hope to see Big Nick in the cinema next year?
