The importance of NATO “the longest-running and strongest defense alliance in world history”, for the international security environment, with an emphasis on the defense of fundamental values such as Territorial integrityThe respect for International Lawthe protection of human valueemphasizes the Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of its establishment.
In his article in “Vima tis Sunday”, the Minister of Foreign Affairs declares that Greece supports the strengthening of transatlantic ties in the field of security and defense, alongside the development of an autonomous and responsible European defense identity. In fact, he underlines that the recent accession of Sweden as the 32nd member of the Alliance, which Greece supported from the very beginning, demonstrates that the Alliance, seventy-five years later, continues to be a pole of attraction and a pillar of security for Europe and the world.
Further emphasizing the importance of NATO, Mr. Gerapetritis points out not so much the historicity but the proven necessity of the alliance in the international security environment, especially in periods of time when crises tend to become normal.
In particular, he points out that in advance, the purpose of the alliance is to defend fundamental values such as territorial integrity, respect for International Law, the protection of human value and adds: “And at a critical time, with the most typical example of the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine , the member states of the Alliance are demonstrably demonstrating unity and determination in condemning the violations of the above values”.
Outside the field of armed conflicts, he notes that the Alliance plays an active role in addressing challenges that tend to destabilize international and regional security through asymmetric and hybrid threats.
In this direction, as he points out, he is also developing deterrent capabilities in areas such as cyber security and the fight once morest disinformation and fake news.
G. Gerapetritis made a special reference to the accession of Greece to NATO, on February 18, 1952, emphasizing that our country made a strategically important choice for its orientation towards the West, which was consolidated with its participation in the EU.
Finally, the Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasizes the country’s firm commitment to international multilateralism and the defense of international peace and security, and expresses the will for Greece to actively contribute to global stability, continuously participating in peacekeeping missions under the auspices of the OHE and developing relations of cooperation and mutual respect with countries beyond the European horizon, from Africa, Asia and Latin America.
