“Georgian Airways Talks Flights to Russia as Restrictions Lifted: Latest Updates”

Georgian Airways confirmed that they might start flights from Georgia to Russia “if they find such an opportunity.” This was stated by the head of the carrier Tamaz Gaiashvili in an interview with Business Media Georgia.

“We did not plan to start flights from Tbilisi to Russia, we will see how events develop and what the situation will be. The start of flights requires preparation, it does not happen that today the restriction is lifted and flights begin tomorrow,” Mr. Gaiashvili emphasized. He added that other areas are priorities for the company: first of all, we are talking regarding European cities: Milan, Berlin, Larnaca and others.

On May 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the ban on flights to Georgia for Russian airlines, and also canceled the visa regime for Georgian citizens from May 15. The Ministry of Economy of Georgia said that they would give permission for flights to those Russian airlines that did not fall under Western sanctions, but so far there have been no such requests. It is known that Red Wings requested permission from the Federal Air Transport Agency for flights to Georgia from Moscow, Samara and Kazan. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport announced daily flights only from Moscow and only on Superjets.

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili called the abolition of visas a provocation. However, the government of Georgia publicly supported Moscow’s decision.
