Georgiadis: Inspections are also coming to pharmacies for illegal prescriptions

Speaking to OPEN, the Minister of Health said that the case of pharmacies is more complex, as pharmacists are obliged to carry out prescriptions: “So, the pharmacist can reasonably say that ‘I was brought a prescription and I carried it out.’ You can’t condemn a pharmacy for filling some prescriptions. This check will be done very carefully so as not to wrong anyone.”

Regarding the control of doctors, Mr. Georgiadis said that he will “run” and back from 2024: “Right now, we are conducting the most extensive control of illegal prescriptions that has ever been done in Greece. What you have seen so far are the first results of this very organized audit. We have identified 1,200 doctors involved in illegal prescriptions, but the audit will also go backwards because the electronic traces are not deleted. So when we’re done with 2024, we’ll go to 2023, 2022, etc.”

For the doctors involved in overprescriptions, the Minister of Health stated that they have already been excluded from the prescription system, while when asked about the doctor who will be asked to pay a fine of 800,000 euros and whether he himself will be able to pay it, he said: “That will be decided by the tax office when they will have to execute him, as I do not know what property he has. The law is specific and we must take back the illegal profit. If the bank has real estate or money, I don’t know that.”
