HATTIESBURG, MISS — Jay’Den Turner and Dwon Odom each recorded double-doubles, but Georgia State fell at Southern Miss 79-73 Thursday at Reed Green Coliseum.
Turner had 15 points and 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double, while Odom scored 14 points and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds. Leslie Nkereuwem helped out with 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals, and Toneari Lane added 15 points.
Georgia State trailed 75-61 with 5:28 left when Lucas Taylor’s 3-pointer ignited a 12-2 run to pull GSU within 77-73 in the final minute. But the Panthers (6-7, 1-1 Sun Belt) might get no closer and suffered their first Sun Belt loss.
The Panthers struggled defensively as Austin Crowley, the Preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year, scored 25 points for Southern Miss (7-7, 1-1) and three others reached double figures.
“Our defensive effort simply was not good enough,” head coach Jonas Hayes said. “We’ve just got to find the importance of guarding for 40 minutes.”
Georgia State, the top free throw shooting team in the Sun Belt and one of the best in nation, had uncharacteristic struggles there tonight, going just 11-for-21.
Southern Miss built an 11-point lead in the first half before a bucket by Turner brought the Panthers within 38-35 with two minutes left. But the Golden Eagles ended the half with seven straight points to take a 44-35 lead into the locker room.
Georgia State continues this road swing Saturday at South Alabama in a 4 p.m. ET game. The Panthers next home game is Thursday, Jan. 11 vs. Old Dominion at 7 p.m. at the GSU Convocation Center. For tickets, visit GeorgiaStateSports.com/tix.
